First of all you need the definition of New England: the six states Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_england
Then check which astronauts were born in these states.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Astronaut_birthplaces_by_US_state
We have five in Connecticut, one in Maine, thirteen in Massachusetts, two in New Hampshire, one in Rhode Island and one in Vermont. That makes a total of 23.
However, not all of these astronauts have travelled in space. Brian O'Leary (from Massachusetts) and Duane Graveline (from Vermont) did not travel in space. That leaves 21 astroanuts from New England who went on a space mission.
