John Gagliardi coached at Saint John's University in Collegeville, Minnesota from 1953 to 2012, for a total of 59 years (60 seasons). He retired after the 2012 season.
The current longest tenured coach is Bob Ford of the University of Albany. He was hired in 1970 to resurrect a program which had been dropped at the school in 1924. From 1970 to 1972, Albany football was played as a "club sport". Full varsity games began in 1973 and he remains head coach of the Great Danes to this day.
