We teach our young children to use the word 'ta' as an easy replacement for please and thank you. Does anyone know how this usage of the word came about?

Sounds like a very shortened version of 'Thanks'. Also, numerous web searches of British slang only give the definition as above. Guess you might have to find a 300 year old Brit to explain further.
