    Currently, how many buildings are taller than the Empire State Building?

    According to this list, 18. There are another 3 proposed or under construction that will be taller when co mpleted, and the list includes the World Trade Center Twin Towers, noted as destroyed.

    From the above reference: of the 50 highest buildings, only one is in Europe, the Shard in London at number 40. Is there any reason why Europeans seem reluctant to join this race to the top?
