Where did the custom of ckinking glasses after a toast originate?

Question #129018. Asked by flwrchyld. (Jan 17 13 9:22 AM)

I don't know where. But it had something to do with the drinks spilling into each other when there were clinked together and it was a precaution to make sure no one was trying to poison anyone.

There are several theories, including to scare away evil spirits with the noise. The one most quoted, though, is the poison theory, where originally people would exhange wine to prove it wasn't poisoned. This then changed to just clinking the glasses as a gesture of trust.

Ancient Greece seems to be where the custom originated.
