Why do CSI search a crime scene with torches instead of turning on the lights? Or is that merely dramatic license?

Question #129023. Asked by Jabberwok. (Jan 17 13 6:30 PM)

You can see better with a small directional light than you can with the room flooded with light. When you are looking for prints, stains or other clues, you need to narrow your focus. If you have light everywhere you will get too many reflections on your target object.

I'm trying to find the titles and author of two picture books in a series. They were beautifully drawn, about a blond girl who was the rightful queen that was taken over by a very evil man in black. The girl wore her hair in Swedish-like braids over her head. In one scene, she stands up on a table and confronts the evil man. In another scene, a friend lights himself on fire and throws himself from a tower to save her. Can anyone help me?
