A German patent in 1904 contained the earliest proposal for color television, while in 1925 Vladimir Zworykin filed a patent disclosure for an all-electronic color television system. The first practical demonstration of television in color was given by Baird in {1928;} he used mechanical scanning with a Nipkow disk having three spirals of 30 apertures, one spiral for each primary color in sequence. The light source at the receiver was composed of two gas-discharge tubes, one of mercury vapor and helium for the green and blue colors, and a neon tube for red. In 1929 H.E. Ives and colleagues at Bell Telephone Laboratories transmitted 50-line color television images between New York City and Washington, {D.C.;} this also was a mechanical method, but one that sent simultaneously the three primary color signals over three separate circuits. In the same year Frank Gray, also of Bell Laboratories, applied for a patent that described a method of transmitting two or more signals over a single {channel;} this introduced important new principles that were to be the foundation of modern (compatible) color television as it was developed about 20 years later.

Vladimir Kosma Zworykin, considered the 'father of TV' original held the patent for the CRT. RCA ended up paying one million dollars for that patent at a later date. Philo Taylor Farnsworth while working for RCA developed designs for colour TV. He later in life was disturbed by the way TV was being used. He amassed 165 patents. Peter Goldmark of CBS invented the rotating three-filter system allowing colour TV. RCA-NBC claim Paul Wiemer did this.(FYI Goldmark also invented the forerunner to todays VCR) June 24/53 RCA jumps the gun by not waiting for the NTSC approval and goes straight to the FCC to submitt a petition. July 22/53 NTCA petition submitted. Nov. 23/53 CBS aires the first commercial NTSC approved colour program, with special permission from the FCC. Dec. 17/53 at 5:31:17PM NBC aired their colourcast logo. Dec. 17/53 at 6:15PM CBS aired their first colour program. Dec. 17/52 at 6:30PM NBC followed with their first colour program. So, the FCC approved colour TV, sometime between June 24/53 and Dec. 17/53. I suspect it was between 12:00AM and 5:31:17PM on Dec. 17/53 Sources: www.uspto.gov www.inventormuseum.com/television.htm www.novia.net/(tilde)ereitan/ www.ev-stift-gymm.guetersloh.de/massmedia/timeline/liste.html
