Besides the obvious (the person's name and Social Security Number), cards for SSNs issued before June 25, 2011, may give some geographical information about the person. The first three digits are the Area Number. Before 1972, this indicated the state in which the number was first issued. From 1972 until 2011, it was based on the person's mailing address when he/she first applied for a card. The randomization system implemented in 2011 eliminated any geographical significance of this kind.
