    Did any animal or species become extinct during 2012?

    Unfortunately, yes. Some animals that were declared extinct in 2012 include:

    The copper striped blue-tailed skink (Emoia impar) of Hawaii.
    The Japanese river otter (Lutra lutra whiteleyi).
    The Pinta Island tortoise (Chelonoidis nigra abingdonii) of Pinta Island of the Galapagos Islands.
    The Siamese crocodile (Crocodylus siamensis).
    And possibly the ivory-billed woodpecker (Campephilus principalis).
