Hay is used to feed cattle and sheep in the winter while silage is used in the winter. More information about the process to make hay and the process to make silage can be found here: http://braddenvillage.wordpress.com/2011/05/15/whats-the-difference-between-hay-and-sileage/

When hay is made the grass has to be dried first. Silage is made before the grass is dry. Both crops are used as feed for livestock during the winter months when they cannot graze the fields.
