    Strictly speaking, that was the date for 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone'. Either because Scholastic thought 'philosopher' was too hard a word, or because they thought that sorcerers would sell better, they changed the title for the US release in September or October 1998 (according to some places). Wikipedia just says 1998. According to Amazon, the date was September 8th, 1999. http://www.amazon.com/Harry-Potter-Sorcerers-Stone-Book/dp/059035342X
