At the Battle of Oran (off Algeria in the Mediterranean Sea) on July 30, 1940, the British Navy destroyed six ships of the French flotilla, fearing that occupied France would turn the vessels over to the Axis (library.thinkquest.org). At the Battle of Taranto (off the coast of Italy in the Ionian Sea), British aircarft sank or badly damaged four Italian vessels(militaryhistory.about.com). On December 7, 1941, Japanese aircaft sank or badly damaged eight American vessels, along with over 300 aircarft, at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii (militaryhistory.about.com).
