What did Ingrid Bergman famously exclaim after opening the envelope at the 41st Annual Academy Awards ceremony and why did she say it?

    Question #129581. Asked by Picard25. (Feb 17 13 5:21 AM)

    RollTidewinner

From the Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences website (http://aaspeechesdb.oscars.org/link/047-4/)

    ear: 1974 (47th) Academy Awards

Category: Actress in a Supporting Role

Film Title: Murder on the Orient Express

    Winner: Ingrid Bergman

    Presenter: Katharine Ross, Peter Falk

Date & Venue: April 8, 1975; Dorothy Chandler Pavilion

    INGRID BERGMAN:
Thank you very much indeed. It's always very nice to get an Oscar. But in the past he has shown that he is very forgetful and also has the wrong timing. Because last year when "Day and Night" won for the best picture I couldn't believe it that Valentina Cortese was not nominated, because she gave the most beautiful performance. [Finds Cortese in the audience:] There you are! She gave the most beautiful performance that all we actresses recognized because, after all, we have all forgotten our lines and always open the wrong doors, and it was wonderful to see her do it so beautifully. Therefore I am... It's so ironic that this year she's nominated when the picture won last year. I don't quite understand that, but here I am and I'm her rival and I don't like it at all. Please forgive me, Valentina. I didn't mean to. Thank you.

[Ed. note: "Day for Night" was the Oscar winner in the Foreign Language Film category the previous year (the 1973 award year), but was not eligible in other award categories because the film had not been released in Los Angeles theaters during 1973; the film was subsequently released in Los Angeles in 1974 and received three nominations, including supporting actress for Valentina Cortese.]

    "It's a tie"

At the 41st Academy Awards in 1969, Miss Bergman was a presenter for Best Actress. It was the first (and so far only) time there had been a tie for Best Actress.

She opened the envelope, expecting to see a single name, and discovered Katharine Hepburn and Barbra Streisand had tied.

Here is video of her opening the envelope and making the announcement.

As a presenter, at the 41st Academy Awards, Bergman opened the envelope and exclaimed "The winner...it's a tie!" because Barbra Streisand and Katharine Hepburn had both won for Best Actress that year.
