    What exactly is a GIF?

Question #129587. Asked by prana. (Feb 17 13 11:29 AM)

"GIF" stands for "Graphics Interchange Format". It is a format of image files and animations. It is designed to compress files (reduce their size) by using indexed colours - a limited palette of 256 colours.

It is used a lot for small images and animations, but are not designed to be used for high quality photographs.

Graphics interchange format, a bit-mapped graphics file format used by the World Wide Web, CompuServe and many BBSs. GIF supports color and various resolutions. It also includes data compression, but because it is limited to 256 colors, it is more effective for scanned images such as illustrations rather than color photos.
