barbs42 says: From USA today 7/8/97 Chronicling 'Russia's War' An upcoming World War II documentary on PBS contains the first footage of Adolf Hitler's remains, producers say. The 10-hour documentary introduced by Henry Kissinger, Russia's War: Blood Upon the Snow, doesn't play up the Hitler footage, in part because filmmakers couldn't verify the authenticity of the remains. They were given the bones, wrapped in newspaper, by Russian officials for just one hour in Moscow archives in 1995. The filmmakers wanted to keep the film focused on the history of Russia during the reign of Josef Stalin and do not mention the Hitler footage until the ninth hour of the documentary. Russia's War begins airing Friday in some cities and July 14 in others (check local listings). Two-hour installments will air for five weeks. In the installment titled The Fall of the Swastika, the film shows what is believed to be part of Hitler's skull and a piece of jawbone with teeth intact. The skull has a bullet hole, presumably self-inflicted as the Russians closed in on the Nazi leader's Berlin bunker on April 30, 1945, near the end of the war. Reports of the existence of Hitler's remains first surfaced in 1992. In 1995, The Death of Hitler (W.W. Norton) carried a photograph of a skull and jawbone that Russians claimed to be Hitler's and quoted a forensics expert who said he was 80% certain Russia had the right bones. Produced by London-based IBP Film Distribution, the film focuses on Russians' battles on two fronts: external aggression from Hitler and internal terror from Stalin.
