Are modern humans hybrids between neanderthals and earlier humans?

Pretty much, but depends on your ethnic group. Europeans and Asians have the highest percentage of Neanderthal DNA, sub-Sharan Africans the least. If you're of northern European descent, you probably have somewhere between 1% to 4% Neanderthal genes. This is certainly nothing to be ashamed of; in many ways Neanderthals were superior to Cro-Magnons. Why they died out is still a mystery.
