I have this book WWII: Strange and Fascinating Facts. This is what it states for the term 'GI'. The term used througout WWII in referring to nearly anything related to the U.S.Army. It was generally understood to stand for Government Issue, but actually began when supply clerks listed garbage cans as GI for 'galvanized iron'. That is really fascinating, don't you think?
