Laika, a stray found on the streets of Moscow, rocketed to fame aboard a Soviet space ship on Nov. 3, 1957. The flight came only a month after the Soviets launched the space race by putting into orbit the first man-made satellite, Sputnik. Laika - Mission Information: Laika was launched aboard Sputnik 2 on November 3, 1957 by the Soviet Union. She was the first living creature in space. There was no way to return Laika to Earth so she died in space about a week after the launch. The name 'Laika' means 'barker' in Russian. I didn't know all this, and wish I still didn't. However take your pick. She was either a Heinz 57, cross-breed, or mixed breed.
