After a long night march, General George Armstrong Custer had planned on resting the troops for the day, then attacking the Sioux and Cheyenne the following day. But, early in the morning of June 25, 1876, scouts informed Custer that the valley ahead was white with lodges. They also cautioned Custer that there were more Sioux than the soldiers had bullets, enough Indians to keep the calvary fighting for two or three days. One scout even stated that it was the largest encampment ever seen on the Northern Plains. Custer brushed the warnings aside, saying he could do the job in a day.
Sioux scouts had been seen nearby. Custer's biggest fear was that the Indians would get away. Without finishing breakfast he began shouting orders to his officers. Custer informed his officers that 'the largest Indian camp on the North American continent is ahead and I am going to attack it.'
On the morning of June 25, 1876, the 611 men of the U.S. Seventh Cavalry, under Custer, marched into a little river valley in the Montana Territory. Crazy Horse of the Oglala, Gall and Sitting Bull of the Hunkpapa, and Two Moons of the Cheyenne already knew of Custer's approach. Along with their 3000 warriors, they knew exactly what to expect of him. Custer did not surprise them as he and the Seventh Calvary came looking for a fight. And what a fight it was, at what became known as the Battle of the Little Bighorn.

A very interesting book about this battle, and the two main leaders is 'Crazy Horse and Custer', by Stephen E Ambrose.
