    A hot dry wind that lifts up dust or sand.
    Also called a dust storm or sand storm.

    It's an oppressive wind that blows north from the Sahara, picks up moisture from the Mediterranean and is hot and humid by the time it hits southern Italy, Sicily and other islands of the Med.

    The name comes from an Arabic word for "the east". Presumably someone thought that was where it came from.
