Why is Prince Charles the future King of England? Since his mother is the Queen, why isn't one of her daughters next in line for the throne?

The Queen's only daughter is Princess Anne and as she's younger than Charles, she wouldn't be next in succession anyway.

Sorry, I thought there was a Princess Margaret also.

Margaret is the Queen's younger sister. If they had had a brother (which they did not) he would have become King upon their father's death, even if he had been youngest. As there was no male heir, the elder daughter became queen. Current line of succession is Charles, William, Harry, Andrew, Andrew's two daughters, Edward and then Anne, although she is older than Andrew and Edward.

Queen Elizabeth, the former Princess Elizabeth became Queen when her father King George the VI died becase her parents did not have a son. If they had, he would have become King and his wife would have been Queen. A King can make his spouse Queen, but a Queen cannot make her spouse King. The present order of succession is: HRH The Prince of Wales Prince Charles, HRH Prince William (Wills) of Wales, HRH Prince Henry (Harry) of Wales, then HRH The Duke of York Prince Andrew, HRH Princess Beatrice of York, HRH Princess Eugenie of York , then HRH The Earl of Wessex Prince Edward, then HRH The Princess Royal Princess Anne, son Peter Phillips, daughter Zara Phillips then, HRH Princess Margaret The Countess of Snowden, her son Lord Linley, his child, then her daughter Lady Sarah. If Prince Edward and his wife Sophie have a child, that child will precede Princess Anne. If Prince William marries and has a child, that child, male or female will precede Prince Harry and any offspring he may have. There is talk about dropping the old tradition of the first born male being first in succession to the crown, to the first born child. That would mean if Prince William's first born is a girl and has younger brothers, she would become Queen upon Williams death. Making her the first female in history to become monarch before any brothers. My source: When most children's bedtime stories were The Three Little Pigs or Little Red Riding Hood, mine were the history of the British Royal Family!
