How did the Isle of Man get its name?

    Question #132545. Asked by Professor101. (Sep 17 13 2:27 AM)

The Isle of Man, probably derived the name it uses now from the Saxon word mang (among), being positioned at an almost equal distance between the kingdoms of England, Scotland, Ireland, and Wales.

It is possibly related to the Celtic sea deity known as ManannĂ¡n to the Irish and Manawyddan to the Welsh. Then again, it may simply refer to the island rising out of the sea like a mountain.

The Isle of Man is known as Ellan Vannin in the Manx language. Ellan is a Manx word meaning island.

I read the film 'Suzie Gold' was actually filmed in the Isle of Man, but when I saw it I recognised many local landmarks near my old house. The actual address was Norrice Lea, London N2 and as far as I can see the outdoor shots were exactly there. The Central London shots also looked far too urban to be the Isle of Man, so did the article get it all wrong or did they fool me?
