    Missy,
I don't know where you got the info that the most fatalities came in that battle. At the Battle of the Somme on July 1st 1916, 60,000 British soldiers alone were killed, plus Canadians and of course Germans in the bloodiest battle of World War One.

Terry, the British army did suffer around 60,000 casualties on the first day of The Somme, but not all these were fatalities. About 20,000 soldiers were killed.

    See www.stemnet.nf.ca/beaumont/somme.htm for accurate figures.

Battle of Cannae in 216 BC saw around 45,000 Romans killed according to modern scholars. Though the ancient Roman historians Livy, Plutarch, and Appian say 50,000, Quintilian says 60,000 and Polybius claims as many as 70,000.

Yet even as high as 70k it is not the most bloodiest battles in history, being left behind by Arausio by 85k, Salsu by 200k+ (those as much as 3/4 from drowning), Anchialus by 80k, and Terek River by 100k. And those are just some open field battles prior to the 15th century.
