I read in the Archive of Useless Facts that Ohio wasn't officially a state until 1953 due to an oversight in Congress that caused it to never be actually voted on. Is this true because I find it hard to believe?

Every site I checked say Ohio became a state March 1, 1803. I did find some fascinating facts though that you can read about at: www.oplin.lib.oh.us/products/ohiodefined/ohd-1.html I also found out that in 1953 the nick name Buckeye became official when the legistature named the Ohio Buckeye the state tree. In the archives, who ever gave the information you read, may have been confused because of that fact. See: www.imagesoft.net/flags/i-flag/usa-oh.html Well spotted on your part!

According to these 3 sites, 1953 may be correct (backdated to take effect in 1803):- Ohio, commonly know as the 17th state; technically did not become a state until August 7, 1953. Due to an oversight, Congress never voted on the resolution to admit Ohio to the Union until that date. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/simpsons_world_order/message/37 .. when Ohio was preparing to celebrate the 150th anniversary of its admission to the Union in 1953. Researchers looking for the original statehood documents discovered there'd been a little oversight. While Congress had approved Ohio's boundaries and constitution, it had never passed a resolution formally admitting the future land of the Buckeyes. Technically, therefore, Ohio was not a state. .. Ohio congressman George Bender thought it was no laughing matter. He introduced a bill in Congress to admit Ohio to the Union retroactive to March 1, 1803. At a special session at the old state capital in Chillicothe the Ohio state legislature approved a new petition for statehood that was delivered to Washington on horseback. Congress subsequently passed a joint resolution, and President Eisenhower, after a few more jokes, signed it on August 7, 1953. www.straightdope.com/classics/a5_127.html On March 1, 1803, Ohio became the 17th state to enter the Union. Its entry was based upon the Northwest Ordinance, the Enabling Act of April 30, 1802, and the Ohio Constitution, adopted November 29, 1802. Formal Congressional admittance of Ohio into the Union was by a Joint Resolution of Congress (H.J. Res. 121), on August 7, 1953, to take effect March 1, 1803 (Public Law 204, Chapter 337). This 150-year lapse in formal admittance did not affect Ohio's legal status as a state. www.rootsweb.com/%7Eohfrankl/Land/ohl2.html
