The Jewish religion is probably the first major religion which believed in a single God. Up to then, people believed in lots of Gods. The Christian religion and the Muslim religion both descended from the Jewish religion. The Jews believe that God has a personal name which can be written down but not spoken. In Hebrew, there are no vowels, so it is written down as the four consonants YHWH. If you're looking to find out the proper name of the Judeo-Christian God (credited in both religions for the creation of the world), you are not going to get very far on a translation of the Bible. In Exodus, God does reveal his personal name to Moses ("and my name, 'Adonai', was not known to them [Abraham, Isaac and Jacob]" - Exodus 6:3). There is, according to legend and mysticism, another longer 42-letter name which refers to God (which is never directly spelled out). On the whole, the Jewish faith and the Hebrew language have six ways of referring to God: Elohim, Adonai, Y'houa (Jehova), Shadai, Hashem, and by the 42-letter name. By comparison, in Arabic God is known only as Allah, and the Christian religion does not distinguish between the Lord as God the creator and Jesus (a fact which leads to much confusion and misinterpretation of the scriptures).
