Roger Bresnahan was the greatest catcher the Dead Ball Era ever had. His best seasons were with John McGraw's New York Giants from 1903 to 1908. He batted over .300 twice in that span (including a remarkable .350 batting average in 1903) and had great speed to the point that McGraw placed Bresnahan in the leadoff spot most of the time. In 1905, Bresnahan moved behind the plate and became a full-time catcher. He teamed up with battery-mate Christy Mathewson on the mound and helped lead the New York Giants to their first World Series victory in 1905. That season he appeared in 104 games (87 as a catcher) and batted .302. In his last season with the Giants in 1908, Bresnahan appeared in 140 games including an incredible mark of 139 games as a catcher. He also batted .283 that season and led the league in walks with 83. Bresnahan's greatest feat, however, was something that he did off the field rather than on the field. In 1908, he invented shin guards for catchers to wear while behind the plate. It was such a brilliant invention that today it has become a part of the game as shin guards are worn by every Major League catcher in every game to help prevent injury. http://members.aol.com/tycobb1911/bresnahan/bresnahan.html
