Joseph Niepce took the first photograph, in 1827, not 1837. Maybe this was not considered a 'successful' photograph. As the previous poster said, Daguerre made his first successful 'daguerrotype' in 1837, so if the date 1837 is correct, the answer is Daguerre. Source: http://www.daguerreo.com/history.html
