In the original Captain Marvel comic who was the superhero modeled after?

    Question #13879. Asked by Timbo03. (Sep 25 01 9:08 PM)

    Jack Flash

Captain Marvel first appeared in Whiz Comics No.2 in February 1940. He was an orphan newsboy named Billy Batson, who magically turned into Captain Marvel whenever he shouted his magic word 'Shazam'. However, the publishers of DC Comics claimed that Captain Marvel was clearly based on their own popular hero, Superman. A lengthy court battle was waged over the next decade and after much wrangling (and heavy legal costs) Whiz Comics eventually conceded defeat. But there is no doubt that the two characters embodied different {concepts;} Billy Batson was just an ordinary mortal whereas Superman was actually an alien from another planet who disguised himself as an earthman. So it is open to doubt whether Captain Marvel was specifically modelled on Superman. See The International Book of Comics by Denis Gifford.
