Tibbetts was personally selected by General Henry H Arnold to command a special combat unit for training crews to deliver atomic bombs. On 6 August 1945 Colonel Tibbetts piloted the B-29 Enola Gay over Hiroshima to deliver history's first atomic attack. Source: The Encyclopedia of World War II edited by Thomas Parrish.
