    What period in French history is the novel and Broadway musical "Les Misérables" based on?

    The novel takes place in Paris in 1832 during the Revolution. The book the play is based on is 'Les Miserables' by Victor Hugo and was written about 1862.

    Senior Moments

    Saw the Musical twice in London before it got to Broadway. The story finishes around 1832. The beginning is about 1815 when Valjean is released from jail after spending 19 years there for stealing a loaf of bread.

    1815 - Valjean is released from prison (Toulon).
    1823 - Valjean is mayor/factory owner, Javert assigned to same town (Montrueil Sur Mer, or Vigau in movie), Fantine fired from factory.
    1832 - Cosette is grown up, she falls in love with Marius, battle ensues, Valjean dies.
