In some cases of poisoning by ingestion, why is the patient/victim strongly advised not to induce vomitting?

Because the poision will do just as much damage coming back up, as it did going down. My source was a health class taken a long time ago.

I believe this is true only if the stuff ingested is some type of caustic chemical that will burn the throat. Other types of poison should be vomited to keep them from getting into the bloodstream.
