I've heard (with regard to Timex) that the hands are at ten past two so that they frame the company's name.

The optical-psychology behind this is that the mind will gravitate to the smallest area contained within the "barriers" (the hands at 10 and 10 make a perfect barrier) thusly directing the eyes and subconscious toward the name (usually at the apex just under 12) which creates an impression of the brand-name on the mind.
Sort of a subliminal message.
