Graphic artist Harvey Ball invented the smiley face as part of a campaign for State Mutual Life Assurance to get their employees to smile a lot. In 1964 he spent about 10 minutes designing and earning $45 for it.
[Editor's note: Good Bye! was an opinionated quarterly magazine which chronicled the dead - famous, infamous and non-famous from 1996 through 2002. The editor has since moved on to swards that offer him more green for his stiffs. But in the interests of history, this archive remains as a virtual tombstone to the days when a Xerox machine and a rudimentary knowledge of html were enough to earn the world's disregard.] http://www.goodbyemag.com/
