An essential component of early TV cameras was something called an image orthicon tube, colloquially called an 'Immy' by people in the business. 'Emmy' is apparently a variant of 'Immy', chosen because it sounded a little more feminine and thus more appropriate to the female statuette. {Sources;} Brewer's Dictionary of 20th-Century Phrase and Fable and various websites including www.cnn.com/SHOWBIZ/9709/emmys/history/ and www.howstuffworks.com/emmy/htm
