How did T V's Emmy Awards get their name?

    Question #14443. Asked by Maggie.

    Tabby Tom

An essential component of early TV cameras was something called an image orthicon tube, colloquially called an 'Immy' by people in the business. 'Emmy' is apparently a variant of 'Immy', chosen because it sounded a little more feminine and thus more appropriate to the female statuette.
