Late Spring 1957 -- Having nursed the production for more than a year and seen it postponed in March, allegedly because of casting difficulties, Cheryl Crawford called its creators into her office on the morning of April 22 and told them she was quitting. Bernstein felt suicidal. “I don’t know how many people begged me not to waste my time on something that could not possibly succeed . . . a show full of hatefulness and ugliness.”
