I know the answer to this and only posted it as I thought that it was interesting. I am beginning to believe that UK text books have different facts in them to those in the USA as I am suprised that nobody has replied. I will give a cryptic clue which is 8 8 1 1

I made the same guess but could find no proof, but now I've found the following {websites;} http://www.neupc.org/hickok.html http://wildbillhickok.homestead.com/ Apparently James Butler Hickok was nicknamed 'Duck Bill' because of his protruding upper lip, and only later became known as 'Wild Bill'. You're probably right, Alpendene, about UK reference books. I've never seen any mention of the name Duck Bill before. But I did know about the 'dead man's hand', so your clue confirmed my suspicions.
