    		George Eliot, a brilliant writer who was not beautiful and who suffered for it when she was young, wrote some of the most important novels in the English language. As a girl she was called "Clematis" or mental beauty, a name she viewed as "a satire." She called herself hideous and ugly, and had the misfortune to fall in love with Herbert Spencer, a man who wrote tracts about the importance of physical beauty.
