According to Wiki -- Both Gehrig and Flaherty have that honor. If you go by date, Flaherty wins by four years.
The first number retired by a team in a major league sport was the number 1, belonging to Ray Flaherty of the New York Giants football team, in 1935.
The Yankees retired Gehrig's uniform number "4", making him the first player in history to be afforded that honor. Lou Gehrig's number 4 was retired by the New York Yankees in 1939.
