When did Cricket begin in Britain?

    Question #14613. Asked by kimm44. (Nov 22 01 12:50 PM)

    The Gorm

There are references to bat/ball games as early as the 14th century and there is a reference to 'crequette' being played in about 1540. There are some earlier references to Flanders but we don't believe that, do we?

The game got towards the modern form from the 1760s when Hambledon CC took on all comers (including the 'rest' of England) at Broadhalfpenny Down. Another major landmark was the formation of the Marylebone CC (MCC) in 1787. To this day they are the guardiand of the Laws (not rules) of Cricket.
