an alternative for an old standard question - the bread is weighed in avoirdupois measures (ie 16drams to the ounce, 16 ounces to the pound) Gold is measured in Troy weights) Any good reference book will give the equivalents as 1 ounce Troy measure = 1.097 ounces Avoirdupois therefore giving the answer to your question.

1 pound Avoirdupois of bread is 7000 grains 1 pound Troy of gold(precious metal) is 5760 grains There are however only 12 Troy ounces to the pound but 16 Avoirdupois ounces to the pound. An ounce of bread (437.5 grains) is therefore lighter than an ounce of gold (480 grains) !
