During WW2, in terms of machines of war, what two letters preceded -109, -110 and -262?

    Question #14940. Asked by bookworm.

    Quentin the Quizman

    M.E.

I don't know if case is important but being a pedantic old thing I think 'Me' is more correct

I think the answer you are looking for is PT. They are US Navy ships and JFK
served on the PT-109. The movie of the same name was loosely based on this.

I hate to disagree with Brainy Blonde, but Me is more likely to be correct, standing for Messerschmidt.
The Me-109 was a single seat fighter, the Me-110 a twin-engined fighter-bomber and the Me-262 was an early jet fighter used by the Luftwaffe at the end of WWII.
Another possibility (describing the same aircraft) is Bf standing for Bayerische Flugzeugwerke the plant at which Willy Messerschmidt was chief designer from 1927.
Sources consulted include 'Horrido' by Col. Raymond F. Toliver and Trevor J. {Constable;} MacMillan's {Encyclopaedia;} The Encyclopaedia of Air {Warfare;} my own general knowledge stemming form forty years of reading about aircraft and air warfare.

Me and PT are both correct

If you are inquiring about WW2 1939-45 it has to be Me. If you are after the abridged version of the war that the Americans were in then you can add PT

Before I accept PT I'd like someone to tell me about PT110 and PT262 in the same manner that I have described Me-110 and Me-262. I accept the fame of PT109, but did the others even exist?

'PT 109 was stationed in the Pacific. John F. Kennedy was assigned the PT 109
in April of 1943. The boat did patrols and was involved in some battles. The
boat was rammed by the Japanese Destroyer IJN DD Amigari on August 2, 1943,
losing two crew members. Lieutenant Kennedy was very instrumental in the rescue
of members of his crew. They swam to shore and were rescued several days later.'
    See: http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/mandm/pt109.htm

    The PT Boat Page
'I searched the Web for information about PT Boats and came up pretty dry so I
decided to start a page dedicated to the men who served in the 'Mosquito Fleet'
during World War II. It struck me that many people out there may not even have
seen the sitcom McHale's Navy, let alone heard anything about what PT Boats were
and what part they played in the war.' See:
    http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/mandm/ptboatp1.htm

PT-109 sunk after being rammed by Japanese destroyer Amigiri off Kolombangara
Island, Blackett Strait, Solomon Islands, 2 August 1943.
PT-110 sunk after collision in Ablingi Harbor, New Britain, 26 January 1944.

Thank you. I was not trying to get your backs up, just to learn something new!
I was a big JFK fan as a child, so I know the PT109 story quite well, but I'll check out the websites you mention and read about the others.
I am actually old enough to have watched McHale's Navy, too!
    Thanks again for the info

No problem Spanishliz. As we as a country had more experiences involving enemy aircraft, I first thought that it was 'Me' until BB suggested the 'PT' so I have learnt something as well.

You sure didn't get my back up, I was happy to help and hope I have. There is
indeed two answers to this question. If anyone tells you otherwise, or it is
for a contest, here is your proof. Both answers have to be accepted.
Bf 109 Messer Schmitt (ME 109) European Air War Screenshot: Me 109 burning!
    See: http://www.mobygames.com/game/shots/gameShotId=1535/gameId=333

A detailed look at the Messer Schmitt Bf.109. See:
    http://members.aol.com/bf109gust/index.html

The Bf or Me110 was a heavy, twin-engined fighter, designed as a fighter-bomber,
    bomber-interceptor, and escort fighter. See:
    http://www.accessweb.com/users/mconstab/me110.htm

The Messer Schmitt Me 262 'Swallow' is guaranteed a special place in aviation
history, because it was the first jet fighter to become operational in unit
levels and to see combat. See:
    http://azonline.com/tildecnadeau/me-262.htm

The sources for the PT boats are of course below.
