Anonymous says: Nathaniel's Nutmeg is the extraordinary story of an English adventurer, Nathaniel Courthope who seized a spice island called Run and exchanged it for Manhattan Island. Wed Dec 12 17:11:31 CST 2001 Tabby Tom says: I can't find any trace of a place being literally traded for 'a nutmeg'. However, in the course of the Anglo-Dutch conflicts of the 17th century, the Dutch captured the island of Run in the East Indies from the English in 1620 or thereabouts, and the English in the 1660's captured the Dutch settlement of New Amsterdam (essentially the island of Manhattan) from the Dutch. At the treaty of Breda in 1667 the English gave up their claim to Run in exchange for the Dutch ceding Manhattan to England. The importance of the island of Run was that it was the principal source of nutmeg. So Manhattan was effectively traded for a nutmeg plantation, though not for 'a nutmeg'.
