    In reference to military servicemen, what do the initials 'G.I.' stand for?

    		As I understand it, because it described everything they wore or used, it stands for Government Issue

    Senior Moments

    		According to Brewer's Dictionary of 20th Century Phrase and Fable, the term was originally used by USArmy clerks to mean galvanized iron, as in 'GI can' (at the time of WW1 that was also the nickname for a German shell, owing to a physical similarity between the two objects). The meaning of GI later changed to 'general issue' or 'government issue, which is the modern meaning.
