Anyone know the origin or any *history* about the cricket on the hearth and it's good luck properties?

    Question #14957. Asked by trish5150. (Dec 13 01 7:34 PM)

    Son of The Household Cavalry

The festival of the cricket is celebrated in Florence the Sunday of the Ascension, which falls this year on the 27th of May. Many Florentines gather on this day at Cascine Park, where there is a big market with the little insect as the absolute protagonist.
The origin of the festival is unknown. According to popular tradition the cricket was considered the guardian spirit of the hearth. Its presence was a sign of good things to come, such as luck, riches, a wedding, or good weather. If the sound of the cricket was heard coming from inside the hearth, the house was protected from bad luck. Probably this belief was the origin of the custom in Florence of keeping in the house a cricket in a little cage to sing.
