Who played John Boy in the 'Homecoming'?

Between 1969 and 1971 he made several television movies, including The Homecoming which lead to the role of John Boy Walton in the series. Richard Thomas remained with The Waltons until the end of the fifth season, when he left the show to pursue his acting career further. Whilst playing John Boy, however, he was still able to make several more television movies, including The Red Badge of Courage in 1974. He also directed several of The Waltons episodes. Richard Thomas was in 'The Homecoming: A Christmas Story,' a made for TV movie in 1971 as John-Boy Walton. He then went on to play John-Boy in the TV series from 1972 to 1977. His last show on the series was called 'The Achievement.' He left the series at to pursue a film career, although he made a few guest appearances and rejoined the cast for the later double-length specials. 'The Thanksgiving Story' in 1973 'A Walton Wedding' in 1995 and 'A Walton Easter' in 1997 Robert Wightman took over the role when Thomas left and appeared in the made for TV movie 'A Day for Thanks on Waltons' Mountain' in 1982. Two other Walton specials were made in 1982, 'Mother's Day on Waltons Mountain' and 'A Wedding on Waltons Mountain' However, the character of John-Boy wasn't in them.
