Poet John Milton, born on Bread Street in Cheapside, London (1608). After earning B.A. and M.A. degrees at Cambridge, he lived outside London with his parents for 6 years, writing verse and "turning over the Latin and Greek authors." He traveled to Italy and met Galileo, then returned to England as civil war loomed. There he wrote propaganda pamphlets favoring the execution of King Charles.

Looking at an almost 40-year-old map of London today, I saw that there was once a short thoroughfare called "Pickle Herring Street," sort of parallel to Tooley Street. It seems to have been done away with, abolished, destroyed. Can any U.K. resident tell me about this street, the origin of its name, and why it has disappeared? Online sites are not helping.

British (and a lot of other) white sliced bread is mostly made by the Chorleywood Bread Process, and is stodgy and tasteless. Brown sliced bread, on the other hand, is lighter and airier and has taste. Is there a difference in the process?
