It was Claude Monet.

Monet died of lung cancer on December 5, 1926 at the age of 86. This fantastic print, entitled “Saint-Lazare Train Station,” comes from a series of eleven different paintings done by Claude Monet in 1877. Monet actually requested official permission to paint in the station, allowing him to capture the energy and excitement of the locomotives and the people from his location on the platforms. His paintings were unrivaled in their depiction of the steam and smoke-filled French train station, demonstrating his sensitivity to the ever changing atmospheric and lighting conditions. In spite of Monet’s impressionistic treatment of the station, these works accurately reproduced the topography of the area, including even the Pont de l’Europe in some of the paintings. This series also marked the first time that Monet pursued a single theme through different variations, a method he would develop later with the haystacks and the Rouen Cathedral.
