Her name escapes me for now, but it was the woman who played the mammy to Scarlet O'Hara in 'Gone With the Wind' - she won Best Supporting Actress.

Hattie McDaniels was indeed the first black performer to receive an Acadmeny Award for her role as Mammy in the 1939 movie "Gone with the Wind", however she was not the first African American to win an Academy Award! That honor goes to Duke Ellington for his 1935 best short subject "Symphony in Black". This nine minute file about black American life in the 1930's titled "A Rhapsody of Black Life" is Duke Ellington's second movie. It was directed by Fred Waller for Adolph Zukor at Paramount Pictures and was released in 1935. You cav view this file at: http://thepalomar.blogspot.com/
