According to Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable, it was Calchas, a great soothsayer in Greek mythology. However, Lempriere's Classical Dictionary and Robert Graves's 'Greek Myths' both say that Calchas is supposed to have died of grief (in accordance with a prophecy) when he met a seer called Mopsus, who was more gifted than himself.
