The word 'sombrero' is a derivative of the Spanish word 'sombra' meaning shade. This particular hat has a flat crown and a very wide, flat brim. The Texas cowboy adopted this venerable Spanish sombrero. The Mexican variation of the sombrero added an even wider brim and a high, conical crown, the hats worn by the mariachi musicians and charros. These hats are too large and unwieldy for ranch work. Both types of hat usually include a barboquejo or chin strap.
